This chapter describes key contents for an infectious disease epidemiology course that focuses on transmission dynamics—general concepts and mathematical frameworks for studying any infectious disease—rather than on the particularities of individual diseases. Such a course starts with an overview of the special considerations in infectious disease epidemiology, then introduces the compartmental model framework for epidemics in closed populations. Reproductive numbers are introduced conceptually and the means of estimating them discussed, leading to coverage of herd immunity and control measures. The framework is then expanded to cover open populations (with demographics), age-seroprevalence studies, and the impact of heterogeneity on transmission dynamics. Special topics include emerging diseases, vector-borne diseases, study design, and pathogen evolution and population genomics as areas of study in infectious disease epidemiology.
