Abstract

This book argues that the idea that there is a truth within the person discovered through introspection is found in the histories of Hinduism, Christianity, and Buddhism. The book examines this metaphor and the methods developed in those religions to realize it, particularly prayer and meditation. In Christianity and some forms of Hinduism the truth within is linked to the idea of God within. These premodern views of inwardness can be contrasted with a modern understanding of the person.
