Abstract

The goal of this book is to offer a comprehensive account of the rise of the symposion. It proved necessary to begin with an attempt to grasp the essential features of the symposion before enquiring into its origins. The symposion is broadly defined as a culture-oriented aristocratic banquet. It was a nocturnal wine drinking party whose participants ritually competed in diverse cultural pastimes.
