This chapter starts by considering the permanence of the printed word and its relation to Rousseau's efforts at engraving letters and inscriptions in Turin and elsewhere. His relaxed upbringing and relations with his immediate and distant family are explored, together with his ‘adoption’ by Mme de Warens and unsuccessful attempts at earning a living. The reproductive techniques of the pre-industrial Swiss world are contrasted with Rousseau's persistently inexpert efforts at earning a living through craft.

Keywords:   print, engraving, childhood and adolescence, Mme de Warens, reproductive technologies, professional failure
