International Politics of Authoritarian Rule

Oisín Tansey

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines a number of conceptual questions regarding the international dimensions of authoritarianism, and makes three principal contributions. First, it critically engages with the emerging literature on the international dimensions of authoritarian politics and takes issue with some of the underlying assumptions that are guiding conceptual development in the field. Second, it introduces a new typology of international dimensions of authoritarianism that distinguishes clearly between multiple types of international influence, including between active and passive forms of influence. The typology also explores the distinction between autocracy promotion and democracy resistance. Finally, the chapter provides a stock-take of the existing body of the literature and, using the new typology, integrates previously diverse and fragmented findings.

Keywords:   authoritarianism, autocracy promotion, democracy resistance, typology, international influence
