In this commentary, the author argues that with the booming trends of international collaborative research in the biomedical field, ethical challenges have emerged regarding the application of international guidelines, and the debate on ethical universalism and relativism has become salient. Arguments for and against universal values raised in the debate in China are also examined. In the context of a discussion on community engagement in informed consent, the author analyses the Confucian concept of personhood, misleading terminologies of “community consent” or “family consent”, and implications of community engagement in informed consent and the research process.

Keywords:   Universalism, relativism, community consent
