In the past, unbeknownst to many healers, medical treatments owed most, if not all, of their effectiveness to placebo effects. Currently (and again unbeknownst to many healers), placebo effects still play a crucial role in medicine. Placebo researchers now study many facets of the powerful placebo, from psychological mechanisms and neurochemical correlates to clinical studies and physician attitudes. Despite this progress, medical curricula have not evolved as quickly; in turn, many physicians are blind to readily available therapeutic tools that could be extremely beneficial to their patients. Educating future physicians and healthcare professionals in the science of placebos is essential to enhance the quality of both healthcare and medical education. Focusing on North America, this chapter outlines the, as yet, largely unaddressed importance of teaching placebo science to medical students. To conclude, the chapter proposes four learning objectives to help guide the development of courses and materials on the subject.
