Placebo Talks

Cory S. Harris

Oxford University Press

Introducing the major themes of this book, the first chapter briefly summarizes major research accomplishments and remaining knowledge gaps with respect to medical placebos. It then calls attention to the universal nature of placebos and placebo effects, not only in medicine and research but also in our everyday lives. Through analogies from parenting and training, the chapters illuminate placebos as a novel lens for studying and interpreting diverse behaviors and phenomena seldom considered beyond their face value. The chapter provides background on the conception of the book as well as its focus on social science perspectives and depression as the central paradigm of discussion.

Keywords:   medical placebos, placebos, placebo effects, research, social science, depression, analogies
