The effect of electron-nuclear coupling in π‐conjugated systems is described in the limit of interacting electrons via the Pariser-Parr-Pople-Peierls model. It is shown that electron-electron interactions change the nature of the ground and excited states described in Chapter 4. In particular, the groundstate bond alternation is enhanced, the 2Ag state becomes a complex four-soliton excitation, and the 1Bu state is an exciton-polaron The chapter concludes with a description of the role of nuclear quantum fluctuations in destroying the Peierls dimerized phase.
