This chapter outlines the development of the military in the Habsburg Monarchy and assesses its impact on dynastic self-representation. By considering the use of public space in the propagation of military images and values, the chapter shows how a notably more martial character to representations of the dynasty developed during the long reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I (1848–1916). The examination of the political centre establishes a framework for the understanding of patriotic activities and the official emphasis on the military in public life.
