The introductory chapter explains the understanding of human rights upon which the project of examining open remedies is premised; an understanding in which human rights ought to be the subject of deliberation inside and outside courtrooms. It introduces the subject of the book, specifically, declarations of incompatibility, and highlights the principal arguments advanced in the book.
