Hans Christian, inspector of Elers' College, purchases philosophical books for the library to the annoyance of Professor Bugge, the astronomer. The two brothers immerse themselves in Kant's philosophy, which has recently been introduced at the University. Kantian metaphysics and moral philosophy are briefly introduced and the problems caused for the previous curriculum of Wolffian rationalism and Lockean empiricism are indicated.

Keywords:   the introduction of Kant's epistemology at the University, Kantian dualism, phenomena and noumena, Kant's categorical imperative
