As a member of the board of the Cappel Foundation Manthey provides a three-year travel grant for Ørsted to visit European centres of science. Ørsted's itinerary is outlined and his impressions as a traveller are described. The reader is alerted to source criticism of Ørsted's correspondence with his fiancée, family, and friends, not only because Sophie Probsthein's and Ritter's letters have gone missing, but particularly because the editor of Ørsted's and Manthey's letters, Mathilde Ørsted, his daughter, has tried to obliterate Sophie altogether. We accompany Ørsted to his visits of Potsdam, Wörlitz, Leipzig, Dresden, and Pillnitz.

Keywords:   grand tour, the Cappel Foundation, Ørsted's travel economy, problems with archival material, sightseeing
