The concluding chapter has two aims. The first is to provide an integrated overview of the areas in which Boisot forged new understanding. The second is to suggest how Boisot’s work might be taken forward in terms of further research and debate. The overview indicates how Boisot offered a clear conceptualization of knowledge as a cultural concept. This identified the structuring and diffusion of knowledge as a key to the characteristics of different social and organizational systems. Boisot’s work also opened up many new avenues of inquiry. One concerns the conditions that enable knowledge to be created, identified and shared so that it is optimized as an organizational asset. Here his studies at CERN offer many new insights to be pursued. Extensions of Boisot’s analysis across its present boundaries also identify important issues, such as whether authorities can control less structured information now widely diffused through social media.
