The sixth chapter considers the elite group of parliamentarians who attained ministerial office, whether as junior ministers only or also rising to the higher rank of Cabinet membership. It focuses upon their career patterns, and examines the path of political promotion and characteristics needed for success. It discusses the nature of thee work and roles of both junior ministers and Cabinet ministers, and assesses the careers of the key front-bench figures of the inter-war period. The final section of this chapter discusses divisions at the Cabinet level, including the cases of individual resignation and of more widespread factionalism or disagreement.
