The chapter concentrates on rewritings of Greek tragedy that treat the tragic text as the play-within-the-play and/or employ other metatheatrical devices. In these plays the tyranny of the classical past manifests itself as a never-ending re-enactment of a given scenario or text, which evokes the postmodern critique of theatrical representation as a reiteration of the logocentric dominance of the text. The chapter looks at the modern Greek adaptations The Roar (I Voui) by Pavlos Matesis and Klytaimnistra? by Andreas Staïkos next to more the well-known plays Living Quarters by Brian Friel and The Island by Athol Fugard, ending with an examination of Dario Fo and Franca Rame’s short popular version of Medea. In the last two examples, rewriting provides the means to resist the confines of both the classical text and its theatrical representation.
