This chapter charts the life of Greatrakes, from his origins as a second generation Protestant settler in southern Ireland to his experiences as a young man, firstly as exile in England during the civil war, and then as a soldier, administrator and property speculator in the aftermath of the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. It emphasises the pragmatic nature of Greatrakes’ response to these events, while stressing the breadth of his social, religious and political connections in an age of flux and uncertainty.
