Major depression is one of the most prevalent forms of psychopathology today. Its common relapsing and recurring trajectory makes major depression a burdensome and complicated disease that not only leads to human suffering but also places a great economic burden on society. This chapter reviews characteristics of depression that lend themselves to a life course analytic perspective, discusses individual risk factors for depression’s onset and trajectory, and addresses the multifactorial nature of depression.

Keywords:   depression, major depression, life course, risk factors, genetics, stress, childhood adversity, and cognitive styles
