Autism, a developmental disorder typically seen as a condition affecting children, affects individuals throughout their lifetime. The life course perspective has shifted the frame of reference for research and services to bracket the whole course of life. This chapter reviews methodological issues prominent in autism research as they provide an essential context. The actual and potential contributions of a life course approach to key areas of research in this disorder are also discussed.
