This chapter offers a detailed case study of the victims of the Great Terror in Leningrad. It draws on the documentary materials published in the eight volumes of the Leningradskii martirolog, 1937–8 to further the quantitative and statistical analyses of victims of repression in Leningrad city and region already conducted by Ilic (2000 / 2002) and Kozlov (2002). A particular focus in the reading and analysis of these will be placed on the experiences of women in the purge process to further our understanding of the ‘forgotten five per cent’. A close reading can now also be made of the details published in these volumes of the operational orders that underpinned the Great Terror in the Leningrad region.

Keywords:   Terror in Leningrad, statistical data, the scale of repression, dynamics of repression
