This chapter explores the role of paramilitarism on both sides of the Irish War of Independence. British paramilitarism, it is argued here, was shaped by the IRA's violence, by the nature of Ireland's guerrilla warfare, and by the imagined dangers as much as the real threats. It was inspired and driven by the demands of metropolitan politics and by Ireland's place in its midst; it was an answer to a domestic problem before it became a colonial phenomenon. In part, it was a consequence of victory in 1918.
