Chapter 10 examines the politics behind the trajectories of immigrant rights in Sweden and Denmark. It asks why Sweden and Denmark eventually adopted such different approaches. It compares policy developments since the late 1960s, which reveals early dissimilarities in the framing and the impact of framing on policy venues, the policy positions of the parties and the structure of party competition, and the involvement of immigrants in the policy process. The existence of an anti-immigration party in Denmark since the late 1970s has been a major contrast, but different structures of party competition and the differing responses of the mainstream right parties have been decisive in determining immigrant rights and changes in the incorporation regime.
