This chapter examines the diverse types of gloss found in Bodleian MS Fairfax 16, with particular reference to Reson and Sensuallyte and the House of Fame. It sets the glossing of the former in the context of both that of its source-text, the late fourteenth-century French poem Les Echecs Amoureux, and the extensive near-contemporary prose commentary on that poem. After arguing that the glossing of Reson and Sensuallyte as well as that of the House of Fame show how the business of writing shapes as well as reflects the poets’ views of literary authority, it turns to the other, less systematic glosses in the manuscript, which show something of the chaos of conflicting practices by authors, scribes, readers, out of which experimental self-glossing emerges.
