This chapter introduces the chapters included in the volume and discusses the importance of the proposals contained in them for our understanding of the operations, triggers, and constraints involved in structure-building in natural languages. The different approaches to structure-building defended in the chapters are put into context, and the way in which recent developments in the theory have paved the way for their emergence are made explicit.
