This chapter focuses on anti-atheist prejudice. It shows that in North America prejudicial and intolerant attitudes towards atheists are even more severe than those towards Muslims and homosexuals. Distrust (rather than fear or disgust) of atheists is at the heart of these attitudes, as ordinary religious believers share with John Locke the view that those who do not believe in God cannot be trusted because they do not fear supernatural punishment for moral transgressions.
