The polemic/apologetic passages, 2:14‐3:6 and 4:1‐6, betray the presence of two groups of opponents, one made up of Corinthians (the ‘Spirit‐people’) and the other of outsiders, who had formed an alliance against Paul. The function of the intervening section (3:7‐18) was to drive a wedge between them by making the intruders' message as unattractive as possible to the Corinthian group.
