We sometimes appreciate works in the various arts aesthetically. Moreover, the avant-garde interests philosophers partly because it challenges traditional conceptions of aesthetic appreciation as perceptual. These conceptions are inadequate, at any rate, because some types of art (e.g. literature) do not involve perception. The beginnings of a theory of aesthetic appreciation is sketched. According to this theory, aesthetic appreciation attributes a type of content that is not perceptual but that has a perceptual paradigm. This theory is shown to apply to literature and to avant-garde art. It is a useful addendum to a framework for developing theories of the arts.
