Empirical data is used to explore the two challenges associated with leadership that were introduced in Chapter 1: the ethicality of leadership agendas and leadership's impositional ramifications. A characteristic rule-utilitarian approach to moral justification is identified. This approach prioritizes the survival and prosperity of the organization on the assumption that this will promote the interests of those who depend upon that organization. Some moral issues associated with this justification are discussed. In the process, some contrasting ways of conceptualizing stakeholders are identified, with distinctions being drawn between instrumental normative stakeholders and intrinsic normative stakeholders, and between affected intrinsic normative stakeholders and dependent intrinsic normative stakeholders. Contrasting ways of ethically evaluating broader effect are also identified: one monological, the other dialogical. A similar contrast is then drawn between leader-centred and subject-centred approaches to evaluating worthwhile employee development. The chapter ends with some discussion of different ways of thinking about a leader's agency in relation to morally worrisome outcomes.
