Matter and Division
Matter and Division
This chapter explores two conceptual systems of division developed in the medieval period—one connected to the division of an immaterial substrate, the other connected to the division of a material substrate. This latter sort of division resulted in the numbers, which were additive. Here, an historical sketch is offered that traces a connection made between a certain conception of matter and mathematics, a connection that would have been available to the early moderns.
