The concept of the cryosphere being a biome has only recently gained acceptance. The study of the ecology of these extreme environments is relatively new and demands novel approaches. This chapter discusses priority sites for future research in Antarctica and the Arctic, and the application of remote sensing, sensor technology, and molecular approaches to their investigation. It also outlines the process of developing mathematical models to characterise processes in cryospheric environments.
