Let me address three points. First, Professor Wolterstorff does not believe that the gift of land to Abraham is grounded in the generosity of Abraham toward his nephew Lot. He argues instead that God ‘did not choose Abraham as the initial patriarch in the story of redemption because he was especially good’. Though this is true with respect to the call Abraham hears in Genesis 12, it is not as true for the remainder of the tale. In Genesis 22: 15–18, for example, the call of Abraham that was first mentioned in Genesis 12 is paradoxically given a new and completely different explanation—because Abraham was obedient to God's command to sacrifice his son, he has now fully merited the terms of the promise. The reader of the Bible must pay careful attention to how the promise functions in each story in which it occurs. There is not a single, monochrome picture of this founding event....
