Professor Wolterstorff has set himself the task of explaining ‘how we are to understand the fact that some of God's actions as presented in Scripture seem patently unjust on Scripture's own understanding of justice’. I quote his words, because I am not sure I understand exactly what this project is. It's clearly not just a matter of explaining why the Bible contains apparently contradictory messages and claims. That would be easy, at least in principle. We know that the Bible had many different authors and redactors, working at different times and with different purposes, so it's unsurprising that the work as a whole harbors inconsistencies.
