This chapter provides an overview of the three chapters in Section 2. Chapter 2.1 explains how microbial genes relate to functioning, and how genetic information can be used to detect the functional and structural composition of microbial communities. Chapter 2.2 examines how plant genetic, species, and trait variation can influence and be influenced by the interactions with soil biota. Chapter 2.3 demonstrates the relationship between gene characteristics and the functioning of processes at the scale of the entire planet.
