This chapter offers a synthesis of the discussions in Section 4. The six chapters on community structure and biotic assemblages interweave spatial scales, phylogeny, biogeography, and diversity from microbes to the largest ecosystem engineers, with a central theme of linking biodiversity to ecosystem functioning and ecosystem services. They raise the possibility that research into soil biodiversity can make a difference to human society, and encourage rethinking the paradigms that underpin much research in soil ecology.
