The imaging and quantitative evaluation of magnetic microstructures is a vibrant field with many complementary techniques, including those using electrons, photons, and scanning probes. Each technique has different experimental attributes and advantages in terms of spatial resolution, depth of information, time required for image acquisition, limitations on applied magnetic fields, and any specific requirements for imaging. They can be broadly classified into techniques that measure the stray field distribution around the samples, or those that measure either the sample induction or magnetization. Rapid advances have also been made in using polarized electrons and photons, with the latter exploiting element specificity of core–shell excitations. Interpretation of these images in terms of the underlying microstructure is the real challenge, but advances in micromagnetic modeling, using the Landau–Lifschitz–Gilbert equation, have enabled quantitative matching of experimental and computed images.
