Drawing on scholastic sources such as Aquinas, Régis argues that occasionalism cannot account for the diversity of effects in the natural world. Moreover, Régis argues, motion cannot exist without being diversified, and so the very presence of motion in the world guarantees that bodies are causally efficacious. Régis addresses Malebranche's “no necessary connection” argument head‐on, arguing that there is in fact a logically necessary connection among bodies, one guaranteed by their geometrical properties.
