This chapter attempts in two ways to summarize this book. The first attempt assesses the progress reported here on intraorganismal mechanisms of all sorts that mediate life history evolution broadly construed. On that issue, the glass is much more than half full. The second attempt asks whether the understanding we have gained from mechanisms advances life history theory. On that issue, the glass is at least half empty.

Keywords:   life history evolution, life history theory, molecular biology, intraorganismal mechanisms
