This chapter looks at a range of scholastic attempts to account for the identity of objects through time. The most straightforward sort of Aristotelian solution, in terms of persistence of form, is contrasted with the nominalist framework according to which genuine identity is rare and of brief duration. This view is then shown to reappear in the seventeenth century among the critics of scholasticism.
