This chapter examines two Basque varieties. In Northern Bizkaian Basque, where there is a lexical contrast between accented and unaccented words, the only pitch-accent is H*+L and there is complex phrasing. Standard Basque lacks lexically contrastive prosody, and intonationally is more similar to Spanish. However, nuclear accent is generally preverbal.
