This chapter reviews studies on the link between smoking and prostate cancer. There is now definite evidence that cigarette smoking is not a relevant risk factor for prostate cancer, even after a long latency period. The issue of a modest association remains open to debate, but it is unclear whether such a modest association can be investigated in observational epidemiological studies, in consideration also of the need for careful allowance for confounding, since some differences in other factors (including dietary, socioeconomic, or other) may account for the apparent inconsistencies observed across studies.
