This chapter elaborates the processes of developing and adopting basic standards for data communication and storage on the Internet. The first part of the chapter focuses on the organizational mechanics of the Internet Engineering Task Force. The second part of the chapter focuses on the development of standards for the World Wide Web within the framework of the World Wide Web Consortium.
