The essays collected in this volume had their genesis in a series of lectures given as part of the Academy of European Law annual summer school in European Union (EU) law. This introductory chapter begins with an overview of the subsequent essays. It then discusses whether there are any overall lessons that can be drawn or judgments made as to the nature or direction of EU foreign policy on the basis of these chapters.
