This chapter discusses a major component of the successful delivery of the Liverpool Care Pathway for the Dying Patient (LCP): communication, specifically with patients and their carers. The chapter further elaborates the skills that facilitate communication, as well as the blocking tactics that can hinder communication. It then touches on a difficult subject: how healthcare professionals can handle tough questions posed by dying patients, such as ‘Am I dying?’. The chapter moves on to communicating with the patient's family and relatives, dealing with the cultural issues in communication, and the challenges of working with colleagues.
