This chapter presents some basic elements of the theory of radiative quantum transitions in a two-level system, which are needed to describe the properties of astrophysical lasers as well as their distinctions from astrophysical masers and laboratory lasers. Topics discussed include spontaneous and stimulated emissions, broadening of spectral lines, and resonance scattering of radiation.
