This chapter explains the diverse role of the VSM. It argues that the person appointed to the post, in whatever size of organization, should have the experience and calibre to reflect the responsibilities involved. It states that the major role of the VSM is in strategic planning with senior management, recruitment selection, and deployment of volunteers. The VSM also works with individual staff to help them effectively manage, train, and retain their volunteers.
