If the processes of selection operate to drive change at multiple levels, then, it is argued, the structure that links such multiple forms of change occurring at different levels, what Herbert Simon called the architecture of complexity, is as much a part of a general theory in biology and the social sciences as the selection processes themselves. The chapter ends with a brief overview of the general view of the book that Rutherford was wrong.
