This chapter examines some reasons for keeping religion in the private sphere, and out of politics. It also looks into the general view of democracy that every citizen is entitled to claim the same basic freedom and equality. Neutrality about religion means that a government steps back from endorsement of any religion. A secular reason may be defined as one that does not build any religious assumptions. The chapter argues that some religious people even encourage the idea that religion and reason do not mix. It also follows that truth is not a private matter, but of universal concern, and only freedom can provide the conditions in which debate about it can placed.
