Many contemporary exegetes and theologians conclude that the Bible does not contain natural law doctrine. This chapter first surveys important exegetical works on biblical ethics and law in Judaism and early Christianity. In dialogue with these standard approaches, the chapter then presents four key elements of biblical natural law doctrine, supported by biblical texts. These elements are the created human natural inclinations toward the goods of human flourishing, the Decalogue as natural law, God's ordering wisdom as the fount, and a nuanced relationship between nature and grace.

Keywords:   natural law doctrine, Judaism, Decalogue, divine commands, narrative, extrinsic ethics, pride, finitude
