This chapter offers a succinct account of Narayan’s antecedents and his life from birth to death. The novelist was influenced early in life by three members of his family: his maternal grandmother Ammani, his elder maternal uncle Seshachalam, and his own mother Gnanambal. From a young age he was determined to make a living as a writer. The manner of his falling in love and his unconventional marriage to Rajam reflect his personality; as much as his grief following his young wife’s death after only three years of wedded bliss. It took years and yogic practices for him to recover from the bereavement. Even his only child, Hema, died prematurely. After a life full of struggle, suffering, setbacks, and uncommon success, Narayan passed away in 2001.
