Abstract

This book examines the ways in which the Indian film industry between 1945 and 1955 welcomed a series of shifts to include the female film song performers or playback singers in the process of film production. While playback singing itself received very little attention from scholars, much of whatever was written centred around Lata Mangeshkar.
